The second anti-Semitic incident in a week has shocked Australia

Vandals committed anti-Semitic vandalism in a Jewish neighborhood in Sydney, Australia, on Wednesday. The rioters damaged property, set fire to a stolen car and wrote graffiti on the walls with anti-Semitic statements and inscriptions against Israel.

“There is no place for anti-Semitism in multicultural Australia,” authorities said.

The event in Sydney follows last Friday’s fire at the Adat Israel Synagogue in Melbourne, when the building was set on fire while members of the community were praying inside. The police are still looking for three suspects in this case.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns called this “a hate crime on the streets of Sydney” in an interview with Australian media. Police Commissioner Karen Webb is asking for the public’s help in finding the perpetrators. “The attackers were masked,” she said.

Following the arson of the synagogue, the establishment of a task force in the country to combat anti-Semitism was announced last Monday. The head of the Australian Federal Police, Reese Karsho, said that “the unit will consist of a fast-paced and experienced squad of counter-terrorism investigators, and will focus on threats, violence and hatred towards Australia’s Jewish community and members of parliament .”
