LUCKNOW: The family of Nikita Singhaniaestranged wife of a Bengaluru-based automotive executive Subhash Atulon Wednesday denied any involvement in his death by suicide two days ago. Atul, 34, left behind a 24-page suicide note and an 81-minute video alleging that his wife and in-laws were harassed during a controversial case. legal battle over divorce and child custody in a Jaunpur Family Court in U.P.
Nikita’s paternal uncle Sushil Singhania said in Jaunpur: “Neither I nor any family member was present at the spot. The allegations in the video will be discussed by Nikita soon.”
He said the family has had no contact with Atul for the past three years and expressed confidence in the judiciary. “We are not guilty and we trust that the court will make a fair judgment.” A complaint filed by Atul’s brother Bikas Kumar accused Nikita and her family of demanding Rs 3 crore to withdraw police cases and Rs 30 lakh to grant visitation rights to Atul to see his four-year-old son. In the video, Atul can be seen wearing a sign around his neck that reads “Justice is Due”.
Nikita’s lawyer Vinod Srivastava defended the court’s handling of the divorce and custody case, stating that judicial officer Rita Kaushik acted within legal limits. The Jaunpur Civil Court ruled in the case in July 2024 and fixed specific maintenance for the couple’s son.
Nikita had filed an FIR in Jaunpur Kotwali on April 24, 2022, accusing Atul, his parents Anju Devi and Pawan Modi, and younger brother Bikas of dowry harassment and violations of the dowry prohibition law.
The FIR alleged that Atul’s family demanded a dowry of Rs 10 lakh after their wedding on April 26, 2019, in Varanasi. It also alleged that Atul’s parents again demanded Rs 10 lakh on August 16, 2019, leading to the sudden death of Nikita’s father the next day.
In his note, Atulden denied any link between the dowry demand and her father’s death, claiming that he had been ill for a long time and was being treated at AIIMS Delhi before he died at a local hospital.
