MUMBAI: LT Marg police have arrested a history writer from Dongri for allegedly supplying drugs. Police said the suspect, Danish Ashraf Merchant, who has been arrested by several agencies in the past, even has an illegal drug unit in Dongri.

Along with Merchant, 35, police also arrested Kadar Gulam Shaikh, 34, a resident of Nagpada. The trail leading to the duo started on November 8 when police arrested one Mohammad Ashikur Rehman with 144 grams of ganja. Rehman told police that he had purchased the narcotics from Rehan Shakil Ansari, a resident of Khadak area in Dongri.

When Rehan was arrested, police found 55 grams of ganja on him. “During his interrogations, Rehan revealed that he had purchased the ganja from the Danish merchant and Kadar Shaikh,” the police officer said. “Led by DCP Mohit Garg, the police teams had started searching for both of them, who were on the run. Our teams finally caught them by monitoring their movements.”

The duo has been booked under various sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.” Section 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with organized crime, has also been added to the case, police said.

According to police, the suspect Merchant is a known drug supplier and has even been arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau. He has reportedly worked for several gangs in the past.
